Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa’s third largest national park, extends over 180 000 hectares in the Sundays River region of the Eastern Cape. The park is in a malaria-free region of South Africa, and is just a short drive from Port Elizabeth. The park supports four of the seven South African biomes, and has been extended to include the marine reserve of Bird Island and St. Croix Island, thus expanding the ecological biodiversity to include a variety of marine life. Addo is renowned for its Big Seven – elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, whale and great white shark.

Addo Elephant Safari Lodge is located in a fully fenced and wildlife stocked conservancy bordering the Addo Elephant National Park. The elegant lodge nestles in pristine indigenous forest in a valley of the Zuurberg mountains. The environmentally conscious lodge evokes an authentic African safari atmosphere, and affords discerning guests a peaceful and luxurious reprieve from the daily humdrum.

Accommodation

The ten eco-friendly tented units of Addo Elephant Safari Lodge are constructed of canvas and recycled wood. Some of the spacious suites are set on a hillside, while others nestle amongst mature Yellowwood trees. All units offer panoramic views of the pristine Zuurberg valley.

The luxurious units have large glass sliding doors, which open onto an expansive elevated timber decks with private outdoor spa baths. The en-suite units have solar-powered geysers and additional outdoor showers for bathing beneath the African sky. Each unit has a fireplace for chilly Eastern Cape evenings. Folding camp beds for children are available on request.

Wildlife

Addo National Park started with a population of just 16 elephants in 1931. It is now home to more than 550 of these magnificent pachyderms. The park is also home to over 400 Cape buffalo, and around the endangered Black rhino. Addo has been extended to include the marine reserve of Bird Island and St. Croix Island, and is now home to the Big Seven: Rhino, Lion, Buffalo, Leopard, Southern Right Whale and Great White Shark. But it’s not only the large species that are an attraction – the rare flightless dung beetle, endemic to Southern Africa, is also a resident of Addo.

Marine life includes not only the giants of the ocean, but also breeding colonies of gannets and the endangered African penguin.

Other wildlife species in the conservancy include Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest and Eland as well as a multitude of bird species including; the Black Crowned Heron, Blue Crane, Blue-billed Firefinch, Denham’s Bustard, Knysna Woodpecker, and Pale Chanting Goshawk.

Children
• Children under 3 years of age are accommodated at no charge.
• Children from 4 to 12 years of age may share with adults at 50 % of the adult rate.
• Children from 12 years and older, will be charged the full adult rate whether sharing with parents or staying in a separate unit.
• Maximum of 2 children per room.
• Game drives and nature walks can be tailor-made for children.
• Child minding  facilities are offered at a nominal extra charge. Prior notice to request this service is essential.

Directions

From Port Elizabeth to our Addo Airfield:

Take the N2 North towards Grahamstown. Turn left onto the R335. Motherwell/Addo Elephant National Park. Proceed for 45kms to the town of Addo.

Continue through the town for a further for 3kms turn left to Kirkwood on the R 336 continue on the R336 for 15kms. Look out for our sign indicating the turn off to the airfield on your left-hand side and is opposite the citrus pack shed with the names Dunbrodie estates and Unifruit.

Turn left onto a gravel road and follow our signs. Guest parking is between the boma and the first aircraft hanger. Should guests arrive early we have a lovely waiting area and ablution facilities.

From Port Elizabeth to the Lodge:

Take the N2. Turn left onto the R335. Signage indicates Proceed for 45 km to the town of Addo.

Continue through the town for a further 12 km and turn left onto the R335 Zuurberg Pass Road.

(gravel road) Proceed up the pass for 15km you will reach Zuurberg Mountain Inn Continue past the Inn, down the pass for a further 17km (rough gravel road).

Follow the signs to Addo Elephant Back Safaris & Lodge. ±2.5 hours travelling time.
