Fitzpatrick’s Lodge

Overview

Midway between Skukuza and Berg-en-dal restcamps, in the south-western corner of the world-renowned Kruger Park, lies the 6 000 hectare Jock of the Bushveld Concession Area. Fitzpatrick’s Lodge, just a kilometre from the main Jock Safari Lodge, has an intimate atmosphere and is ideally suited to families or small groups.

In the late 19th Century, the lure of gold brought men from all corners of the world to South Africa. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, author of the animal classic, Jock of the Bushveld, was one of these pioneers. The lodge, named after the charismatic author, offers privacy, exclusivity, personalised service and an authentic safari experience in an unspoilt wilderness.

Accommodation

Fitzpatrick’s Lodge at Jock offers just three suites, each equipped with a private viewing deck and living area, and luxurious en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers. Two of the three rooms cater for a maximum of two adults and two children per room. Fitzpatrick’s can accommodate a maximum of six adults and four children.

The lodge can either be booked as a whole, with its own personal chef and game ranger, or as individual suites. Menus can be personalised for your requirements if the entire lodge is booked.

Wildlife

There is a staggering diversity of wildlife. Guests frequently sight the Big Five during their stay, along with cheetah, hippo, wild dog and a large variety of antelope. Evening game drives reveal the more rarely seen nocturnal creatures, such as porcupine, aardwolf, genet, serval, white tailed mongoose, civet and brown hyena. Rock dassies, baboon and klipspringer occur frequently in the rocky landscape of the southern Kruger, while giraffe graze on the tall trees and herds of wildebeest and zebra occur in the open plains.

Birdlife is prolific with over 350 species recorded. Raptor sightings include Martial, Tawny and Fish Eagles as well as Steppe Buzzards. Southern Ground Hornbills have nesting sites close to the lodge, and iridescently plumaged birds, such as the Lilac-breasted roller, Southern Carmine Bee-eaters, and Malachite kingfishers are often sighted.

Frogging safaris provide opportunities for sighting, or hearing, the 34 species of frogs located in the area.

A once-off fee is payable in cash upon entering the Kruger National Park.

Directions

• BY ROAD:

From Johannesburg

• Take the N12 national road to Witbank which becomes the N4 national road.

• Follow the N4 through Nelspruit and Malelane.

• About 2 km outside Malelane, take the turn-off to enter the Kruger National Park at the Malelane Gate where an entrance fee is payable.

• Please have your confirmation or voucher with you.

• Once you enter Malelane gate, drive straight on the H3 road, for about 37 km and turn left at the “Jock Safari Lodge” sign.

• Then a 3 km dirt road and you are at the lodge.
