Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at the Kruger National Park

We depart from Johannesburg between 06h00 – 07h30 to allow for various collection points. Our route takes us through the wide open spaces of the Highveld, down the escarpment and through the scenic Lowveld area. We stop for lunch en-route (own expense) and reach the Kruger National Park and Skukuza Rest Camp in the afternoon.

After settling in to our accommodations (twin bed chalets with en suite bathrooms), you go out on your first game drive which is a SAN PARKS sunset drive. A sunset drive affords you the opportunity to see nocturnal animals that are more active at night and the Park’s rangers are allowed to return after the normal gate closing times. Note that these drives take place in one of the Kruger Park’s vehicles with a Park’s ranger. This is not a private game drive and there may be other guests on this drive. (Children under 6 years of age are not permitted on open vehicle drives.)

Dinner is a three course meal, served al fresco at our private camp within Skukuza. Wine is served with dinner but guests are welcome to bring along additional / alternative drinks which can be purchased at the shop.

Day 2: Private Game Reserve

After an early wake-up call (the time varies according to the seasons and park gate opening times) we have tea or coffee & rusks (dried biscuits to be dunked in your coffee or tea). Our morning safari will take approximately 3 hours. Your guide has an intimate knowledge of the park, which contributes a great deal towards brilliant sightings!

Directly after breakfast at our camp, we head to one of the world renowned Private Game Reserves adjacent to Kruger in our closed, air conditioned tour vehicle.

We arrive in time for lunch and have some time to freshen up before departing on your afternoon game drive in one of the lodge’s open game drive vehicles. This drive generally takes about 4 hours and tends to extend into the early evening. The Private Reserves are particularly famous for its close sightings of predators. Although we cannot guarantee these sightings, your chances of seeing these magnificent animals are very good!

Dinner is served under the stars (weather permitting). The day ends with discussions around the open fire about what you saw today and the plans for tomorrow.

Day 3: Private Game Reserve 

Private lodges offer two game drives per day, during which your experienced game ranger and expert local Shangaan tracker will share their extensive knowledge and love for the African bush with you. Due to a carefully planned and managed habituation process, animals and birds in the reserve have become used to having the game drive vehicles in close proximity, without feeling threatened. This allows us to get really close to them and forms part of the appeal of the Private Game Reserves!

After breakfast guests are welcome to join the morning walk. The rest of the day is spent at leisure, relaxing in your room or at the pool. Lunch is served around 14h00.

Meal times are a sociable affair, with dinner served under the stars (weather permitting). Only the freshest produce is used and this is served with the local wines which South Africa is famous for.

Day 4: Last day on your Africa Wildlife Safari

An early wake-up and coffee starts your last day on your Africa Wildlife Safari. One last opportunity to experience the magic that only the African Bush can offer!

After your morning Game Drive breakfast is served. Directly after breakfast we begin our journey back to Johannesburg. We stop en-route for lunch (own expense).

The drive back to Johannesburg takes at least 6 hours and guests are advised to sleep over in Johannesburg on this night.

Optional Excursion (free of charge)

On offer an optional excursion to visit select attractions along the Panorama Route. Depart camp at 06h00 stop in one of the small towns en-route for breakfast (included) and visit attractions such as the Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels, Lisbon Waterfalls and God’s Window. This excursion is available free of charge and will replace the morning game drive. You will be at your Lodge in time for lunch. This excursion will be co-ordinated while you are on safari with. Important Notes

It is important to note that this is not a private safari and more than likely there will be other guests joining you on the game drive vehicles, air-conditioned mini bus transfer vehicles as well as in the dining facility.

The child policies vary from lodge to lodge. Some lodges do not accept children under 12 at all, while others gladly accept children but do not allow younger children on the open game drive vehicles for safety reasons. These lodges offer babysitting services at a nominal extra charge. Please be sure to enquire about this before making your reservation.

Guests flying out of OR Tambo Airport on the last day are reminded to not book any flights earlier than 19h00 (domestic) or 20h00 (international) in order to give us enough time to get you to the airport. We recommend that you rather stay over in Johannesburg if possible. Since we cannot guarantee our arrival time in Johannesburg on the last day we will not be held responsible for reimbursements of flight tickets, should we arrive later than expected. Guests flying out of Nelspruit on the last day may, depending on their flight details, not have enough time to see the Panorama Route. Day 1 – 2: Famous Dunes of Sossusvlei

From Windhoek you fly to Namibia’s Sossusvlei region, famous for its towering sand dunes and surreal landscapes. Here you’ll by staying at Little Kulala, a luxurious desert retreat with 11 glass-walled suites each with a private plunge pool and an upstairs deck inviting you to settle in and enjoy those phenomenal desert sunsets and clear, starlit nights.

Little Kulala sits in a private wilderness reserve with its own gate leading to the Namib-Naukluft Park and some of the tallest sand dunes in the world. Beat the crowds by setting off early and seeing Sossusvlei in the rich, warm morning light – the best time of day for photography. Another real highlight is the moon-like landscape of Dead Vlei where a vast clay pan is punctuated by dead camel thorn trees and cradled amongst the reddish-orange dunes.

Day 3 – 4: Wild & Unique Damaraland

A 3-hour flight takes you over the Namib Desert and shipwreck-littered Skeleton Coast, before turning inland to northern Damaraland for two nights. The flight alone is an unforgettable experience as you gaze down on a sea of sand and the icy blue Atlantic Ocean, and then leave the dunes for the rugged beauty of Damaraland.

Explore the Haub River Valley on morning and afternoon game drives in search of Namibia’s desert-adapted elephants, zebra, giraffe and possibly a black rhino or two. Seeing wildlife is just part of Damaraland Camp’s appeal; a stay here is also about the solitude, space and astonishing beauty of this ancient, rock-strewn landscape as you watch the desert change colours at sunset or sit down to breakfast on a remote hilltop.

The Damaraland Torra Conservancy is a shining example of how community-based tourism can work with the camp itself being largely run by people from the local community who clearly love what they do.

Day 5 – 6: Game-Filled Etosha National Park

From Damaraland it’s a 1-hour flight to Ongava; a private reserve bordering Etosha National Park. For the next two nights you’ll be staying at Ongava Lodge which has a fantastic hillside location with views extending out over a busy waterhole to the vast plains beyond.

Not only is Etosha Namibia’s top wildlife destination but the vast, flat saltpans and numerous waterholes make for some of Africa’s easiest big game viewing – especially during the dry season! Go on guided half- or full-day game drives or opt to drive yourself around the park; Etosha’s roads are well signposted and in fine condition too.

The game viewing in Ongava Game Reserve is also good, if not quite as good as Etosha, and along with guided game drives the lodge offers nature walks, night drives, viewing hides and the chance to track white rhino on foot – an experience not to be missed! In the evenings, sit down to dinner overlooking the floodlit waterhole and endless procession of wildlife coming down for a drink.

Day 7: Depart Etosha

After a final breakfast at Ongava Lodge your Namibia safari comes to an end, and you’re transferred by light aircraft to Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek for your onward travel arrangements.

Day 1  Nkwali Camp
On arrival at Mfuwe International Airport a guide will meet you. The drive to Nkwali Camp is 1 hour through colourful local scenes of villages, agriculture as well as bush. Nkwali Camp has a wide view of the Luangwa River. On private land, and overlooking the South Luangwa National Park, Nkwali is ideally situated for the start of your safari. The six rooms all look out over the river and have open air bathrooms. Depending on your arrival time, in the day you will enjoy a lunch looking out over the lagoon to the back of Nkwali or if in the afternoon for tea and the afternoon and night game drive.

Day 2  Nkwali Camp
At dawn breakfast is served around the campfire. The porridge heated on the fire and toast cooked by the coals. The morning walk or drive will leave soon after, entering the park by boat from the camp or by the nearby pontoon. The game in the area is excellent – and includes many family herds of elephants and the endemic species of giraffe, the Thornicroft Giraffe. A mid-morning break of tea, coffee and cake will be taken by a scenic point on a lagoon or the Luangwa River. Return to camp for lunch around mid-day. After lunch you can cool off in the swimming pool or siesta. Tea will be served in the afternoon and then off on an afternoon game drive that continues into the early night giving the chance to see the nocturnal world. Usually one returns to camp about 20.00 hrs with dinner generally at 20.30.

Day 3 – 6  Nkwali Camp
A few more days to enjoy the game viewing at Nkwali on walks, drives, boating or you may wish to go on an all day picnic. Taking a scout with you, you will be able to enjoy a walk or explore further afield in the park. Lunch will be under a tree or next to a lagoon and you will then be able to take a siesta or simply spend a lazy couple of hours reading a book or watching the fascinating animals and landscape around you. Returning to camp when you are ready – you may decide to continue straight on your evening drive and return to come after sundowners – this is a very flexible day.

Day 7  Nkwali Camp
Your last day in the South Luangwa – boating, walking or game driving as you wish as well as enjoying the food and good company before heading off to your next destination.

Day 8  Transit
After breakfast you will transfer to Mfuwe Airport for your connecting flight.

There are diverse habitats, from huge ox bow lagoons of varying stages of maturity, woodlands, ebony groves, grassland and thickets, that host a great variety of wildlife. The birdlife is also excellent with over 450 species to be seen.

Our tour starts off with a drive from the top of the plateau down to Nelspruit.  We will then drive to the border of Mozambique, passing the southern point of the Kruger National Park.  After the border formalities, we will make our way up to beautiful Bilene, a small town surrounded by inland lakes.

Day 2:  Bilene

After an early morning swim in the clear waters of the inland lake that stretches for 27 kms, breakfast is served, after which you can relax on the beach at our campsite.  Your guide will organize you a boat trip across the inland lake to the beaches of the Indian Ocean after which your local guide will then take you for a walk along the beach to one of the spots where you might be lucky enough to observe the Hawksbill and Green Turtles which make the Bilene area their home.  The rest of the day can be spent familiarizing yourself with the local fisherman and maybe even going prawning with them.  This is an excellent time to immerse yourself in their culture and to get to know how the locals live.  There is a local market where you can find an assortment of curios, and taking a walk around town is a must.

Days 3, 4:  Barra Reef

After waking up to the sounds of the Indian Ocean, we will enjoy a hearty tropical breakfast before travelling north to the town of Inhambane, with one of the best curio markets in Mozambique.  After a visit to the market, we will head towards Barra Beach.  The warm tropical waters of Barra attract many species of fish and other sea dwelling creatures such as Green and Leather-Back Turtles, Manta Rays and the Whale Shark, the majestic giant of the sea.

Days 5, 6:  Tofo Beach

Leaving Barra Reef a short drive takes us to Tofo Beach for the next 2 days.
The days are spent organizing swimming trips, lazing in the sun, swimming in the tropical sea, playing beach volleyball and walking down to the beach bar for sundowners.  The small town of Tofo also has its own small curio and food market, and one or two restaurants where they serve great seafood and other local dishes typical of Mozambique.  Your guide will organize your Ocean Safari, which is included in the tour.  If you would like to learn how to surf, you will have the opportunity to take some classes.

Day 7: Marloth Park (South Africa)

After time spent on the pristine beaches, our journey takes us back to South Africa, bypassing Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique.  Once across the border, it is just a short drive to Marloth Park, where we will spend the night.
Marloth Park is a wildlife sanctuary close to the Kruger National Park, where you are very likely to see animals such as warthog and impala in the streets and gardens.

Day 1 : Nkwali Camp

On arrival at Mfuwe International Airport a guide from Robin Pope Safaris will meet you. The drive to Nkwali Camp is 1 hour through colourful local scenes of villages, agriculture as well as bush. Nkwali Camp has a wide view of the Luangwa River. On Robin’s private land, and overlooking the South Luangwa National Park, Nkwali is ideally situated for the start of your safari. The six rooms all look out over the river and have open air bathrooms. Depending on your arrival time, in the day you will enjoy a lunch looking out over the lagoon to the back of Nkwali or if in the afternoon for tea and the afternoon and night game drive.

Day 2 : Mobile Camp

After an early breakfast, you will be heading north to start your walking mobile which has become known as THE wilderness experience of the South Luangwa. Your drive is some 90kms to the Mupamadzi River along a bush road, through remote parts of the park. You arrive in camp for lunch around mid-day. The camp is already set up for your arrival with well-equipped walk-in tents. The shower is under a tree and the toilet is a long drop with a wooden throne. Enjoy a relaxing siesta after lunch, before tea and going for a walk around camp in the afternoon, to return for sundowners and dinner in the open under the stars!

Day 3 : Mobile Camp

Up at sunrise for the morning walk. The area is remote and wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the game shy and unused to man. From ant’s to buffalo, a bird’s nest to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush. The mobile camp will be packed and moved to Camp 2 and lunch will be ready as the guests arrive late morning. Lunch, siesta and afternoon walk.

Day 4 – 6 : Mobile Camp
Day 4 – Explore the area on foot – returning to the same campsite.
Day 5/6 – The camp will be moved again to camp 3 during the morning as you walk further down the river. The Mupamadzi River is a major tributary of the Luangwa. All walks are led by an experienced naturalist and accompanied by an armed game scout.

Day 7 : Tena Tena or Nsefu Camp

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Luangwa River crossing point opposite Tena Tena. This is a 4 to 5 hour drive. Tena Tena staff will meet and boat the party across the river, and then a 20 minute drive to Tena Tena camp.
This remote and small camp lies within the National Park and enjoys a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. A grove of mahogany trees shade the large custom-made tents. From the thatched dining room and bar, guests can watch the elephants, hippo and antelope on the riverbank. Tena has 5 tents, each with a dressing room, open air bathroom and private verandah that overlooks a water hole. Most meals are taken under the shade of a huge Mahogany tree in the centre of the camp. On arrival you will be shown to your tent and then lunch will be served followed by a well deserved siesta before the afternoon and evening game drive. Time to rest those weary legs!!

Day 8: Depart 

Transfer back to Mfuwe International Airport for your flight and onward arrangements

Days 1 & 2: Arrive Pemba – road transfer to Mucojo, dhow transfer to Mogundula Island

You will be met off your flight at Pemba airport by Oscar Soares and shown to the transfer vehicle for the approximate 3-hour road transfer to Mucojo through parts of the Quirimbas National Park and arriving at the little coastal village where you will board a traditional dhow bound for Mogundula Island.
The ancient art of traditional dhow travel has been practiced in this region for centuries. Today for the local population of the region it still remains the only way of travel between the islands. In our opinion, Mogundula Island is one of the prettiest and uninhabited fantastic base from which to explore the area.

On Mogundula we usually set up our mobile eco camp under the shade of the islands beautiful Chestnut trees. Your guide and crew will offer you cold drinks and settle you in to your tents and no doubt you will be keen to hit the beach for a swim and explore.

Meals: Overnight camp and exploring on Mogundula Island and surrounds.
Day trip by dhow to the Pangane Peninsula or similar and/or Macaloe Island from camp.
Dinner. All drinks to clients own expense.

Day 3: Start of Dhow Safari – Mogundula Island to Ulumbwa:

Depart Mogundula for your exploration into the Quirimbas Archipelago! Sail into the clearest of blue water with pristine corals below to explore under snorkel. The Ulumbwa river mouth beckons and it is here where fascinating rural fishing villages dot the shore. Your chance to camp in the open Mozambique bush south of Ulumbwa.

Day 4: Day trip to Matemo Island

Turquoise clear waters and beautiful scenery awaits you en route, but before enjoy an early morning sail up the Ulumbwa estuary viewing a variety of birds & mangroves that thrive in this area. In the afternoon, take a tour through this fishing village getting to know the ways of these fisher folk as interpreted by your knowledgeable guide.
We will stop on the southern tip of Matemo Island and explore this part of the island. Returning to our camp at Ulumbwa.

Days 5, 6 & 7: Ulumbwa region to Ibo Island

Probably the most compelling attraction in the Quirimbas, Ibo’s 200-year-old ghost town and 16th Century forts make for a fascinating journey to an era long forgotten. The Ibo Island guided Experience (included) provides a chance to interact with the amazingly friendly local people and observe their unique island culture and heritage and a way of life that has not changed for hundreds of years. Wander around the mysterious ruins amongst forts and ancient trade buildings with many fascinating stories just waiting to be told.
Ibo Island lodge has spectacular views over the waterfront and accommodates guests in beautifully simple yet elegant rooms. Historic colonial mansions with high ceilings have been stylishly renovated to accommodate the lodge with various verandas, tropical gardens and a spectacular roof top restaurant that provides the ideal venue to watch the sun go down. The emphasis at Ibo Island Lodge is on complete relaxation and a base from which to explore this fascinating island.

Day 8: Ibo Island to Pemba for flight out

An included beautiful light aircraft flight over the islands and turquoise waters transfers you to Pemba International Airport from Ibo Island Lodge.

Accommodation

Island Slumber: 

Mobile safari style dome tents with fitted ground sheet, insect screen, safari style stretcher bedds with 2 inch hight density foam mattresses, shower & beach towerls, linen and sleeping bag. Mobile eco camp bathrooms include bush showers and bush toilets.

A dining tent accommodates guests for meals which are either served sit down table cloth style or more relaxed around the fire with your toes in the sand. Yours to decide each day. All meals are prepared by the chef with an accent on fresh seafood.
