Day 2 – Tour of Victoria Falls

After breakfast, you will be transferred to OR Tambo International Airport for your flight to Victoria Falls.

Upon arrival at Victoria Falls Airport you’ll be met by your guide and taken to the falls. If you’re travelling when the Zambezi River is in full flood (February to May) you’ll find out first hand why Victoria Falls is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tuyna “The Smoke That Thunders”. The largest sheet of falling water in the world, you hear the falls before your see them; the roar accompanied by a drenching spray!

Around two thirds of Victoria Falls lies in Zimbabwe (the rest being in Zambia) so you’ll get to see the Main Falls, as well as the Devil’s Cataract, Rainbow Falls and Horseshoe Falls. As you wander through the surrounding rainforest your guide will give you a brief history of Victoria Falls, and share interesting facts about the plants, birds and even animals that you see along the way.

Having admired the falls from every possible viewpoint, you’ll be driven to Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge – a distance of around 70 km. Set on the bank of the Zambezi River, Imbabala is a small and welcoming lodge with nine thatched chalets each opening onto beautiful river views.

Day 3 – Game Drive & Zambezi River Safari

Wake up early and start your day with a game drive in the private wildlife concession surrounding Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge. Drives are led by the lodge’s highly skilled guides, who’ll go out of their way to get you good sightings of the park’s elephant, impala, warthog, giraffe and colourful collection of birds.

After the game drive brunch is served on the lodge lawns, then there’s time for a nap or laze in your hammock before the afternoon river safari. It’s wonderfully peaceful cruising the Zambezi River, drink in hand, as you drift up close to hippo, look for elephant at the water’s edge, and watch the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and fiery red.

Your day ends with drinks around the fire and dinner under the stars, before strolling back to your comfortable chalet with its king-size bed draped in white mosquito netting.

Day 4 – Full Day Safari in Chobe National Park

Itinerary

Day 1: Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge

You’ll be met upon arrival at Victoria Falls Airport, and transferred to Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge in its peaceful setting on the bank of the Zambezi River. Imbabala is a small and unpretentious lodge with nine thatched chalets, each opening onto a private verandah where a shaded hammock invites you to settle in and enjoy the magnificent river views.

Spend a relaxed afternoon swaying in your hammock, stretched out alongside the swimming pool or indulging in a massage at the recently opened Imbabala Spa. Since Imbabala sits in a private wildlife concession don’t be surprised to see impala grazing on the lodge lawns, monkeys playing in the tree branches or even the occasional elephant wandering through camp!

Day 2: Game Drive & Zambezi River Safari

Wake up to coffee and home-baked rusks, followed by a morning game drive in this private game concession. Imbabala has highly skilled and enthusiastic guides who are only too happy to share their knowledge of the wildlife that you see: elephant, impala, warthog, giraffe, and (if you’re lucky) lion or even leopard!

You return from your game drive to brunch served out under shady trees, then there’s time to relax and enjoy your surroundings before afternoon tea and a sundowner cruise. Floating along the Zambezi River is not only wonderfully peaceful; it’s also great for game viewing as you drift past hippo, crocodile and herds of elephant gathered at the water’s edge.

Day 3: Safari Activities at Imbabala

How you spend today is completely up to you: enjoy another morning game drive or opt instead to go angling for toothy tiger fish – one of the best fighting fresh water fish in the world. Or perhaps you’d prefer a guided walking safari; not only is this a chance to focus in on the plants, birds and smaller creatures but there’s also the thrilling possibility of encountering larger game too!

In the afternoon we’d recommend another Zambezi River cruise, the perfect way to end the day as you toast the sunset whilst chugging along the river, then return to the lodge for an al fresco dinner served under the stars.

Day 4: Tour of Victoria Falls

Today you’re transferred from Imbabala Zambezi Game Lodge to The Elephant Camp, stopping en route for a guided tour of the mighty Victoria Falls. Nothing prepares you for the sight and sound of the Zambezi River in full flood thundering over the lip of the falls; the roar accompanied by clouds of drenching spray that can be seen up to 20km away!

Around two thirds of Victoria Falls lies in Zimbabwe (the rest being in Zambia) with well laid out paths winding through rainforest and opening up to viewpoints of pretty rainbow-lit mist and white curtains of water. Going with a guide not only gives you insight into the history of Victoria Falls, but your guide will also know all the best spots to take those make-your-friends-jealous photos of you in front of this most spectacular of waterfalls.

After the tour you’re transferred to The Elephant Camp, an easy 15-minute drive from the falls.

Day 5: Elephant Interaction & Departure

Wake up in your luxurious tented suite which has glass sliding doors opening onto a private deck and plunge pool with fantastic views. Breakfast is served on the main lodge deck, after which you’re taken to the Wild Horizons Elephant Sanctuary (on the lodge grounds) where you’re able to meet and even feed the orphaned elephants – a true safari highlight!

From The Elephant Camp you’re driven to Victoria Falls Airport for your flight home or your onward travel arrangements.

Victoria Falls Hotel

Fondly known as the “Grand Old Lady of the Falls’, the Victoria Falls Hotel is one of Africa’s most celebrated and nostalgic hotels. Built in 1904, in the gracious Edwardian style of the colonial era, this 5-star luxury hotel which offers every modern convenience is set in lush sub-tropical gardens within the Victoria Falls National Park. The ‘smoke that thunders’ is less than a 10 minute walk away along the hotel’s private pathway, and is both audible and visible from the landmark hotel itself. Stanley’s Terrace, long a famous rendezvous for Africa’s adventurers, offers clear views of the Victoria Falls Bridge, part of Cecil John Rhode’s ambitious plan to build a railway line from Cape to Cairo. The ambiance and grandeur of the Victoria Falls Hotel is as unforgettable as the sights and sounds of the spectacular waterfall.

Itinerary

Day 1: Tour of Victoria Falls

Day 2: Game Drive & Zambezi River Safari

Day 3: Full Day Safari in Chobe National Park

After breakfast you cross over into next-door Botswana to spend a full day in Chobe National Park. Your game viewing begins with a cruise on the Chobe River, an incredible safari experience which delivers regular sightings of hippo, crocodile, zebra, impala and – the stars of the show – Chobe’s famous elephant herds drinking, bathing or even swimming across the river, trunks held high!

After the cruise enjoy a buffet lunch at Chobe Game Lodge, followed by an afternoon game drive. Taking you along the river and deeper into the park, the game drive offers up more sightings of elephant and buffalo as well as the chance of tracking the park’s predators including lion, leopard and even wild dog.

If you’d prefer, you can skip Chobe and spend the day relaxing at Imbabala Lodge or enjoying some of the other activities on offer: go fishing for toothy tiger fish or set off on a guided walking safari in the private concession.

Day 4: Departure

You’re transferred from Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge to Victoria Falls Airport for your onward flight. Victoria Falls is conveniently connected to many top Southern Africa destinations, so ask us how you can build these exciting four days into a longer safari itinerary.

Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge

Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge is situated on a riverine fringe of the mighty Zambezi River where Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia converge. Located 80 kilometers west of Victoria Falls, access is by transfer from Victoria Falls, Livingstone or Kasane. Imbabala offers the chance to unwind but also some of the most amazing game viewing and bird watching in the region, in the seclusion of a private National Parks concession. The 5,000 acre concession has 14 kilometers of private Zambezi river frontage and borders the Chobe Forest Reserve, which is renowned for its massive Elephant population.
Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge offers exclusive accommodation for only 18 guests in 8 individual thatch lodges with en-suite facilities. Each lodge is uniquely decorated and beautifully positioned with spacious verandas opening onto sweeping views of the Zambezi River. Imbabala has one family lodge, (Sleeps 4), four double and three twin-bedded lodges. All doubles can be converted to twins on request and vice versa.

Wildlife

Imbabala Concession

Imbabala Zambezi Safari Lodge lies in a 5,000 acre (2,023 ha) wildlife concession bordering Chobe Forest Reserve. Chobe’s elephant herds regularly move through the Imbabala Concession, and can sometimes be seen swimming across the Zambezi River as they make their way to the islands to feed – an incredible sight to see!

In addition to elephant you’re likely to see buffalo, giraffe, hippo, kudu and black sable antelope. As for the predators, lion and black-backed jackal are present in good numbers, along with more occasional sightings of leopard and the endangered African wild dog. The lodge itself is unfenced and the lawns are often grazed by warthog and impala, while monkeys play in the surrounding trees.

This is an excellent birding area with over 400 species recorded including regional specials such as the long-toed plover, western banded snake eagle and swamp boubou – to name but a few.

Chobe National Park

During dry season the Chobe River supports the largest concentration of elephant found anywhere in Africa and it’s not unusual to see herds of up to a hundred gathered on the riverbank! The river draws plenty of other wildlife too, including large herds of buffalo; zebra and impala feeding on the rice grasses of the floodplains; crocodiles basking on sunny riverbanks and hippo wallowing in the lagoons.

Predator sightings along the river are common, but the best way to see Chobe’s lions is on a game drive – your guide keeping a sharp eye out for fresh tracks. Other highlights of a Chobe game drive include the chance of seeing leopard or wild dogs; sightings of puku, sable and roan antelope; and finding your vehicle surrounded by herds of elephant and buffalo.

Chobe National Park is a must for keen birders with more than 450 species recorded from regional specials such as rosy-throated longclaw and the African skimmer to the spectacle of large flocks of African openbill storks or vibrantly coloured carmine bee-eaters.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Toka Leya Camp, Mosi oa Tunya National Park, Livingstone, Zambia
After arrival in Livingstone you will be met by a representative and transferred directly for a guided tour of the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. At 1708 metres (5604 ft) wide, it is the largest curtain of water in the world and drops 103 metres (338 ft) into the basalt depths of the sheer Zambezi Gorge.

Toka Leya Camp is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River in the eastern sector of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, some 12 kms(7.46 miles) up from the Victoria Falls. The camp consists of 12 safari-style tents, each en-suite with a view of the magnificent Zambezi River and some of its islands. The camp’s dining and bar area is set beneath a shaded canopy of trees overlooking the River and a swimming pool.

Days 2 – 4: Chobe River boat cruise, Chobe National Park and Linyanti Discoverer Camp, Linyanti Concession
After a full breakfast we leave Toka Leya and transfer by road to Livingstone Airport. On leaving Zambia, we fly over the Kazangula border, a point where the four countries of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet.

Enjoy a leisurely shaded boat cruise along the Chobe River, with a light lunch. This boat cruise offers a unique opportunity to observe puku, large herds of elephant, numerous pods of hippo and large crocodiles, as well as enjoying fantastic views of other general game and diverse birdlife.

We then depart by light aircraft transfer to the private Linyanti Concession. After a short game drive we arrive at our private Discoverer camp, which is elegantly set up under African ebony and knobthorn trees overlooking panoramic vistas of the Linyanti Swamps.

The landscape of the Linyanti varies from floodplains to open dry land savannah and forest with sweeping views, creating a paradise for a high diversity of wildlife and bird species. Activities include game drives in the private northern sector of the concession, exploring a range of habitats, from riverbanks to scrub and forest, which reveal a myriad of wildlife en route to slake their thirst from the river. The seldom-seen sitatunga can also be spotted in the waterways, as well as rare roan and sable antelope, plains game and of course their predators, the lion and leopard – with the endangered wild dog as an incredible bonus.

To complete the experience, it is possible to enjoy a full-day excursion to the Savute Channel, with lunch at a scenic setting. This spectacular day gives guests a real understanding of the geology of Northern Botswana, the relationship with the Great African Rift Valley and the chink in the faultline, where the Savute Channel begins. This channel, now flowing for the first time in three decades has resulted in water reaching into the heart of Chobe National Park through the Linyanti Reserve…and game viewing is as a result both diverse and abundant.

Days 5 – 7: Khwai Discoverer Camp, Okavango Delta
Depart by light aircraft to Khwai Discoverer Camp, located in a private concession just north of the Khwai River above the Moremi Game Reserve.

The Khwai Concession is one of the most diverse areas in northern Botswana which seldom disappoints when it comes to producing extraordinary wildlife experiences. The life source for this area is the Khwai River – the northernmost “finger” of the Okavango Delta alluvial fan, which provides vital sustenance to numerous animals.

Over time, the Khwai area has metamorphosed into a wide range of exciting wildlife habitats – some of the most varied to be found in the entire Okavango Delta: a blend of forests, floodplain, wetland and grasslands. The narrow Khwai Channel is home to large mammals such as hippo and crocodile with buffalo and red lechwe often seen grazing along the fringe. The beautiful gallery riverine woodland found along the river provides further sanctuary to birds, primates and leopard. Elusive roan antelope often come to the river to drink. Activities focus around day and night game drives, nature walks and seasonal mokoro excursions.

Away from the river there is a wonderful mix of acacia and leadwood trees of varying sizes that abuts into mopane woodland. The latter, together with the permanent presence of water, attracts large numbers of elephant to the area. Larger predators include lion, wild dog and spotted hyaena, while birdlife found here is just as varied thanks to the colourful palette of habitats.

Accommodation is in 6.3m x 3.5m (20.67 ft x 11.48 ft) walk-in canvas tents (maximum of two guests per tent). The tents are airy and designed to recreate the accommodation style of the early explorers, with richly coloured teak director chairs and minimalist interiors. Separate bedside tables with 12v reading lamps, canvas and wood wardrobes, bathrobes, comfortable beds and mirrors are provided. Camp amenities (conditioning shampoo, soap, shower gel and body lotion) are elegantly displayed for use and private, en-suite separate toilet and shower areas are part of the main structure. Activities focus around day and night game drives, nature walks and seasonal mokoro excursions.

Days 8 – 10: Jacana Camp, Okavango Delta
After breakfast we fly by light aircraft over the shimmering water-world of the Okavango Delta which represents life at its most fertile.

Lush Jacana Camp is situated in a permanently flooded region of the private Jao Concession of the Okavango Delta. A true water camp, it represents the essence of the Delta, with year-round mokoro safaris as well as island bush walks and, water levels permitting, motorboat cruises. In fact, when the flood levels are at their peak we are able to motorboat from the airstrip to the camp, a truly surreal arrival! On one of our full days, we will also enjoy game drives around the productive ‘Jao Flats’ region to the north of camp.

Jacana Camp is set in one of the wetland areas most densely populated with sitatunga and red lechwe. Wildlife concentrations depend on the water flow and volume, thus changing from season to season, but all the large animals can be found in the area including elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo. Pel’s Fishing-Owl, Lesser Jacana, Western Banded Snake-Eagle and Coppery-tailed Coucal are just some of the birding highlights.

Jacana Camp has 5 Meru-style tents. Each is on a wooden deck overlooking the floodplains and has an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet and shower. The bathroom is enclosed but roofless, allowing for showers by starlight. The camp has a plunge pool and the main dining area is on an elevated wooden deck between two magnificent sycamore fig trees and surrounded by dense wild date palms. Downstairs, there is an intimate pub and lounge with an area perfect for campfires under the stars.

Day 11: Transfer to Maun Airport
Bid farewell to the adventure as we transfer by light aircraft to Maun Airport.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta provides a true big five safari experience, with vast herds of elephant, buffalo and hippo making this fertile region their home, as well as numerous antelope, giraffe and zebra, followed by lion, leopard, cheetah and the stealthy crocodile. The delta environment has large numbers of animal populations that are otherwise rare, such as red lechwe, sitatunga, wild dogs and wattled crane. This area is a popular destination for bird watchers with over 450 species recorded, including many Okavango specials and lots of migrants during the summer months.

Chobe National Park
