Wildlife

Large numbers of plains game and predators are found throughout the year. After the recent introduction of rhino to this concession, the area is home to the Big Five. Predators abound, and include several lion prides, leopards, cheetah, hyena, and the rare and endangered Wild dog. Large herds of elephant and buffalo, frequent the area. Blue wildebeest, steenbok, giraffe, greater kudu, impala, Burchell’s zebra and tsessebe abound, and the region’s flood levels attract the much-sought after water-dwelling antelope species such as sitatunga and red lechwe. There are also unexpected little gems – such as the jewelled frogs and neon-blue water lilies.

Jabu, Thembi and Morula are the three semi-habituated elephants that guests have the privilege of getting close to and they can trace the texture of their skin, or marvel at their delicate eyelashes and huge padded feet.

The area is home to over 400 species of birds, including the African fish eagle, Bateleur, Crested and Wattled cranes, Black-tailed godwit, Sacred ibis, Green pigeon and the rare and elusive Pel’s fishing owl.
