Thornybush is a fully fenced private game reserve, teeming with wildlife. The Big Five live here, as well as a multitude of mammals including spotted hyena, cheetah and hippo.  Thornybush guests are treated to frequent sightings of the shy and secretive black rhino. Night drives often reveal the elusive genet, civet, bush baby, porcupine and caracal, with the possibility of observing predators hunting and stalking their prey.

Migratory birds are present from November to April. Notable birds in the area include the Groundscraper thrush, Malachite kingfisher, Martial eagle, Fork-tailed drongo, Namaqua dove, Green pigeon, Black-crowned night heron, Blacksmith plover, and Lesser spotted eagle.
