Itinerary

Day 1 – 2 Chobe

Upon your arrival you will be met and welcomed by a representative from Chobe Game Lodge. You will be transferred by road to the Lodge, where you will spend two nights.
Experience this legendary lodge made famous by Richard Burton and Elisabeth Taylor who celebrated their second wedding at Chobe Game Lodge. After settling into your luxurious Honeymoon Suite, you will have time to freshen up and relax. Enjoy a delicious lunch served on the terrace restaurant overlooking the Chobe River. Set out on your afternoon game activity – a sundowner cruise on the magnificent Chobe River or an exciting game drive exploring the Chobe area. Sunset Cruises are spectacular as you will be able to view wildlife that congregates at the water’s edge and enjoy a spectacular African sunset.

The Chobe National Park is famous for its huge herds of elephant and buffalo and magnificent star-gazing. Your professional guide will be happy to show you the African skies, explaining the stars while sharing local folklore.
Chobe Game Lodge facilities include a riverside boma where traditional dancers perform, a large swimming pool, a stylish cigar bar with an outside terrace overlooking the Chobe River. Chobe Game Lodge also has wildlife reference library with lounge and terrace. Should you wish to pamper yourself whilst on honeymoon, you can schedule an appointment with the in-house beautician.
Day 3 – 4 Savute Channel

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before you transfer to Kasane Airport. Depart on your scheduled charter flight to Savute Safari Lodge, situated inside the world renowned Chobe National 5

Park, where you will stay for two nights. Savute is known for its incredible predator activity and abundance of wildlife.
A handful of small pans sustain Savute’s thousands of animals with a permanent, yet fragile, water source. On your game drive, experience magnificent bull Elephants shuffling past you as you sit in your open vehicle. All drives are led by professional guides who have incredible knowledge of the Savuti area.
Savute Safari Lodge has 12 twin-bedded luxury wood, thatch and glass safari suites, well-suited to the hot and dry conditions. The suites have spacious interiors, glass sliding doors, private viewing decks and en-suite bathrooms.
Facilities at Savute Safari Lodge include a lounge, library and cocktail bar, which are situated in the exquisite thatch and timber main building. A viewing deck is ideal for watching game at the water hole. A swimming pool on a raised wooden teak deck overlooks the channel. After a day out in African bush, cool off with a dip in the plunge pool or sip a cocktail on the viewing deck.
Enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner on your private deck. As the sun sets, you will watch animals drinking at the water holes situated in front of camp. Listen to the sounds of the African night as you enjoy your delicious meal.

Day 5 – 6 Okavango Delta

After an early morning activity and breakfast at Savute Safari Lodge, you will connect with a light aircraft for your flight to Xugana Island Lodge, where you will stay for two nights.
Xugana Lagoon is in the permanent Delta, a world of crystal clear waterways winding through vast reed and papyrus beds and opening onto tranquil lagoons. Located in a private concession, Xugana is a true water -based camp.
Xugana Island Lodge has only eight chalets which are raised on wooden decks. Each chalet has en-suite bathrooms and private decks which overlook the lagoon. Xugana Lagoon offers magnificent African sunsets.
The lodge has an open boma and outdoor dining area. The lounge, bar and dining areas are set back under an Ebony and African Mangosteen tree canopy. The swimming pool, in the centre of the island is a perfect place to relax.
After a delicious lunch, you depart on your afternoon game activity. Enjoy a boat cruise and even try your hand at some fishing for bream and tiger fish. Enjoy tranquil mokoro trips in eco-friendly dugout canoes, combined with adrenaline pumping walks on surrounding lagoons and islands in the concession.
A romantic dinner for two on the famous floating deck, with a magnificent sunset view, will leave you with everlasting memories of the Okavango Delta.

Day 7 – 8 Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

Enjoy a morning activity before departing on your scheduled charter flight to the desert location of Leroo La Tau, where you will spend two nights.
Leroo La Tau is built on 15m high cliffs above the now flowing Boteti River which gives guests opportunities for spectacular wildlife sightings from this raised vantage point.
The main reception and lounge areas sit high on the cliffs overlooking the Boteti Riverbed and the sweeping scrub and grasslands of the Makgadikgadi.
Luxury glass and thatch chalets on individual raised wooden platforms provide unsurpassed views over the dry riverbed and grassy plains.
From the pool you can watch the herds of zebra and wildebeest that congregate to drink from the waterhole. View animals on day and night game drives and perhaps see Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Brown and Spotted Hyena and maybe even the rare White Rhino.
Take part in a memorable tree planting ceremony where you will plant your own tree. A unique gesture where you will contribute to the preservation of the natural environment in Africa – for present and future generations.

Day 9 Departure

After a morning activity and breakfast, you will be transferred from Leroo La Tau to Maun Airport for your onward arrangements. Unforgettable memories, newfound friendships and the promise of a return journey to Botswana ever close to your heart.

Accommodation

Chobe Game Lodge

The only permanent game lodge situated within the famous Chobe National Park, Chobe Game Lodge is Botswana’s premier venue for guests looking for a perfect base to explore Chobe National Park and the Chobe River. Chobe Game Lodge can accommodate up to 94 people in total luxury and our extensive facilities include a large swimming pool with adjacent terrace and a grassy riverside boma area where a Marimba band or traditional dancers can perform. Guests wishing to pamper themselves can schedule an appointment with our in-house beautician or book our gym for a private workout.

Savute Safari Lodge

Situated on the banks of Botswana’s fabled Stolen River, Savute Safari Lodge is a traditional thatched safari lodge in a setting of singular beauty. But just as awe-inspiring is the decades old story of how the river was stolen… and in an unexpected twist, how it was given back.

Xugana Island Lodge

Xugana Lagoon is widely accepted as being the most spectacular permanent water site in the entire Okavango Delta, which in the midst of the Kalahari sands, is Africa’s largest and most awe-inspiring oasis. The Okavango River rises in the highlands of Angola yet never reaches the sea; instead its immense waters empty over the sands of the Kalahari where its great desert thirst is quenched in a wilderness of fresh water lagoons, channels and islands. Xugana Island Lodge is situated on a private concession and takes full advantage of this magnificent site.

Leroo La Tau

Leroo La Tau is situated on the western bank of the Boteti River, northwest of Khumaga Village and about 140 kilometres southeast of Maun. The eastern bank of the Boteti River forms the boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, which stretches away from the riverbank towards its interior of scrubland and mineral rich grasslands. Leroo La Tau is built on cliffs over 10 metres above this changing riverbed environment, offering a raised vantage point which ensures unsurpassed views of the river and the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park to the east.

Our lodges & accommodation

Desert & Delta Safaris’ lodges are small and exclusive. The lodges accommodate between 16 and 24 guests with the exception of Chobe Game Lodge, our largest property which has 46 rooms. Some lodges are located in private concession areas. Chobe Game Lodge is the only permanent lodge built within the Chobe National Park.
Despite the remote locations of our lodges and camps, all the creature comforts that you would expect from a modern hotel are evident. En-suite bathrooms, walk in showers, flush toilets, air conditioning and, where air conditioning is not available, ceiling fans. Tea/coffee making facilities are touches in the rooms to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
Most of our lodges rely on generator power and 12-volt batteries for lighting at night, except for Chobe Game Lodge which has 24 hour power via the national grid.

Travel between our lodges

Flying is an integral part of your Botswana safari and is a unique way to experience the area you are visiting from the air. Part of the experience of visiting Desert & Delta Safaris’ lodges, is the journey between camps.
We offer a fully integrated private air charter service, operated by our sister company Safari Air. Safari Air operates single engine Airvan’s, Cessna 206s, 207s, 210s, Cessna Caravans and a twin engine Britten Norman Islander aircraft. We have a compliment of pilots originating from all over the world including countries such as New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom and Botswana. All our pilots hold Botswana Commercial Pilots Licenses together with Commercial Pilots Licenses for their country of origin.
Unless you have booked a private air charter, your flight transfers will be booked as a “seat on plane” basis. Flight times are arranged according to each day’s requirements and to fit in with activities, thus the plane may pick up and drop off other guest’s en-route to your destination. Times therefore vary from day to day and will be communicated to you the afternoon before departure.

The flight is approximately 25 minutes and you will be amazed as the desert transforms to delta before your eyes. At the airstrip you are met by your guides and transfer in a 4×4 safari vehicle to camp. Over a refreshing drink and light lunch you will be briefed on activities and safety during your stay, then it is time to settle into camp.
Later in the afternoon it is time to begin your first lesson in bush craft and some rules regarding animal behaviour and respect for all the inhabitants of the wilderness. We set out on a short walk, allowing you to become accustomed to some of the sights sounds and smells that make up the language of the African Bush.
We return to camp for a piping hot bucket shower under the stars followed by a tasty dinner. Around the campfire we discuss the lessons of the day and learn more about Botswana and the history of the country and it’s people. For those that can stay awake long enough we can examine some of the stars in the African night sky before heading to bed – ready for an early start the next day.

Day 2 Young Explorers (Okavango Delta)

The day begins before sunrise with coffee around the fire, and a light breakfast before heading out to see what the bush has in store for us. Following the water’s edge gives us the chance to examine some of the tracks left by overnight visitors, as well as identifying some of the multitude of animals, birds and insects that inhabit the forests. Let’s follow the honeyguide bird, and see if it will lead us to a honey nest!
Following another delicious lunch prepared on charcoal, parents are left to a lazy afternoon napping or reading while their young cubs are watched over by their guides, recording the morning’s observations and discoveries in our Bush Journals, learning some traditional bush skills, such as basket weaving or carving the seed of the palm nut into a necklace for Mum! After no time at all, we are off out again, this time in the Mokoro (dugout canoe) and if we are lucky we may spot the sitatunga, one of the world’s most unusual and secretive antelope, while your guides teach you some of the ways to survive in this vast wetland wilderness.
In the evening it’s off to the bush kitchen and be astounded as you learn how the mouthwatering fare is produced on the fire and fresh bread and cakes in the amazing bush oven. Who needs electricity anyway?

Day 3 Young Explorers (Okavango Delta)

With the sunrise comes an introduction to driving large 4×4 vehicles, which are vital out here in the bush. Any idea how to change a tyre on a 4×4? While out and about we are sure to bump into some of the many species of large mammals that inhabit the Okavango Delta including wild dogs, elephants, lion, buffalo, cheetah, wildebeest and impala. Spending time quietly observing these mammals will give you an insight into the structure of their society and how we may understand them through their body language.
That afternoon while your Dad’s snores echo around camp you will learn some of the rules and skills required in order to handle a rifle safely. This is an important tool in our world is not a toy, and should be respected at all times! Under your guides experienced and watchful eyes you can learn to shoot our pellet gun on our own bush range! Later, you may wish to try your angling skills Okavango style, either along the banks of lagoons and channels or, for the more adventurous from the Mokoro! Here you will learn how to catch, handle and release a fish correctly ensuring you do it no harm, though we may wish to keep a couple for dinner!!
The final dinner is cause for celebration though the safari draws to an end, toasting new friends, reminiscing over unique experiences and lifelong memories. The grown-ups would like to drift off to sleep with the ever-present chorus of the hippos and the tinkle of the reed frogs. But for the trainee bushrangers it is the perfect opportunity to head off with a spotlight to try and identify some of the many species that wake up as the sun sets!!

Day 4 Young Explorers (Okavango Delta)

The morning is spent discussing your stay and your guides will ask you to identify several tracks, birds and animals, and to explain some of the skills that you might use to survive in the bush. After this informal bush evaluation you will then be awarded your Okavango Delta certificate and shirt making you an official member of a truly select group of bushrangers, the Ker & Downey Young Explorers!!
After farewells to the camp staff and your guides you transfer by light aircraft onto your next destination.
Services end on arrival at Maun Airport

Itinerary

Day 1 : Toka Leya Camp, Mosi oa Tunya National Park, Livingstone, Zambia
After arrival in Livingstone you will be met by a representative and transferred directly for a guided tour of the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. At 1708 metres (5604 ft) wide, it is the largest curtain of water in the world and drops 103 metres (338 ft) into the basalt depths of the sheer Zambezi Gorge.

Toka Leya Camp is situated on the banks of the Zambezi River in the eastern sector of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, some 12 kms(7.46 miles) up from the Victoria Falls. The camp consists of 12 safari-style tents, each en-suite with a view of the magnificent Zambezi River and some of its islands. The camp’s dining and bar area is set beneath a shaded canopy of trees overlooking the River and a swimming pool.

Days 2 – 4: Chobe River boat cruise, Chobe National Park and Linyanti Discoverer Camp, Linyanti Concession
After a full breakfast we leave Toka Leya and transfer by road to Livingstone Airport. On leaving Zambia, we fly over the Kazangula border, a point where the four countries of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet.

Enjoy a leisurely shaded boat cruise along the Chobe River, with a light lunch. This boat cruise offers a unique opportunity to observe puku, large herds of elephant, numerous pods of hippo and large crocodiles, as well as enjoying fantastic views of other general game and diverse birdlife.

We then depart by light aircraft transfer to the private Linyanti Concession. After a short game drive we arrive at our private Discoverer camp, which is elegantly set up under African ebony and knobthorn trees overlooking panoramic vistas of the Linyanti Swamps.

The landscape of the Linyanti varies from floodplains to open dry land savannah and forest with sweeping views, creating a paradise for a high diversity of wildlife and bird species. Activities include game drives in the private northern sector of the concession, exploring a range of habitats, from riverbanks to scrub and forest, which reveal a myriad of wildlife en route to slake their thirst from the river. The seldom-seen sitatunga can also be spotted in the waterways, as well as rare roan and sable antelope, plains game and of course their predators, the lion and leopard – with the endangered wild dog as an incredible bonus.

To complete the experience, it is possible to enjoy a full-day excursion to the Savute Channel, with lunch at a scenic setting. This spectacular day gives guests a real understanding of the geology of Northern Botswana, the relationship with the Great African Rift Valley and the chink in the faultline, where the Savute Channel begins. This channel, now flowing for the first time in three decades has resulted in water reaching into the heart of Chobe National Park through the Linyanti Reserve…and game viewing is as a result both diverse and abundant.

Days 5 – 7: Khwai Discoverer Camp, Okavango Delta
Depart by light aircraft to Khwai Discoverer Camp, located in a private concession just north of the Khwai River above the Moremi Game Reserve.

The Khwai Concession is one of the most diverse areas in northern Botswana which seldom disappoints when it comes to producing extraordinary wildlife experiences. The life source for this area is the Khwai River – the northernmost “finger” of the Okavango Delta alluvial fan, which provides vital sustenance to numerous animals.

Over time, the Khwai area has metamorphosed into a wide range of exciting wildlife habitats – some of the most varied to be found in the entire Okavango Delta: a blend of forests, floodplain, wetland and grasslands. The narrow Khwai Channel is home to large mammals such as hippo and crocodile with buffalo and red lechwe often seen grazing along the fringe. The beautiful gallery riverine woodland found along the river provides further sanctuary to birds, primates and leopard. Elusive roan antelope often come to the river to drink. Activities focus around day and night game drives, nature walks and seasonal mokoro excursions.

Away from the river there is a wonderful mix of acacia and leadwood trees of varying sizes that abuts into mopane woodland. The latter, together with the permanent presence of water, attracts large numbers of elephant to the area. Larger predators include lion, wild dog and spotted hyaena, while birdlife found here is just as varied thanks to the colourful palette of habitats.

Accommodation is in 6.3m x 3.5m (20.67 ft x 11.48 ft) walk-in canvas tents (maximum of two guests per tent). The tents are airy and designed to recreate the accommodation style of the early explorers, with richly coloured teak director chairs and minimalist interiors. Separate bedside tables with 12v reading lamps, canvas and wood wardrobes, bathrobes, comfortable beds and mirrors are provided. Camp amenities (conditioning shampoo, soap, shower gel and body lotion) are elegantly displayed for use and private, en-suite separate toilet and shower areas are part of the main structure. Activities focus around day and night game drives, nature walks and seasonal mokoro excursions.

Days 8 – 10: Jacana Camp, Okavango Delta
After breakfast we fly by light aircraft over the shimmering water-world of the Okavango Delta which represents life at its most fertile.

Lush Jacana Camp is situated in a permanently flooded region of the private Jao Concession of the Okavango Delta. A true water camp, it represents the essence of the Delta, with year-round mokoro safaris as well as island bush walks and, water levels permitting, motorboat cruises. In fact, when the flood levels are at their peak we are able to motorboat from the airstrip to the camp, a truly surreal arrival! On one of our full days, we will also enjoy game drives around the productive ‘Jao Flats’ region to the north of camp.

Jacana Camp is set in one of the wetland areas most densely populated with sitatunga and red lechwe. Wildlife concentrations depend on the water flow and volume, thus changing from season to season, but all the large animals can be found in the area including elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo. Pel’s Fishing-Owl, Lesser Jacana, Western Banded Snake-Eagle and Coppery-tailed Coucal are just some of the birding highlights.

Jacana Camp has 5 Meru-style tents. Each is on a wooden deck overlooking the floodplains and has an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet and shower. The bathroom is enclosed but roofless, allowing for showers by starlight. The camp has a plunge pool and the main dining area is on an elevated wooden deck between two magnificent sycamore fig trees and surrounded by dense wild date palms. Downstairs, there is an intimate pub and lounge with an area perfect for campfires under the stars.

Day 11: Transfer to Maun Airport
Bid farewell to the adventure as we transfer by light aircraft to Maun Airport.

Wildlife

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta provides a true big five safari experience, with vast herds of elephant, buffalo and hippo making this fertile region their home, as well as numerous antelope, giraffe and zebra, followed by lion, leopard, cheetah and the stealthy crocodile. The delta environment has large numbers of animal populations that are otherwise rare, such as red lechwe, sitatunga, wild dogs and wattled crane. This area is a popular destination for bird watchers with over 450 species recorded, including many Okavango specials and lots of migrants during the summer months.

Chobe National Park

Wildlife

Chobe National Park

Renowned for predators and large concentrations of game, particularly Elephant and Buffalo

Savute Channel

The Savuti area offers great game viewing at certain times of the year. The annual zebra migration is followed by large concentrations of lion. Good sightings of cheetah and leopard are possible and the endangered wild dog also occurs here. Savuti is famous for its large concentrations of elephants that congregate around the waterholes. This makes game-viewing exceptional and hides at waterholes is also a special feature of this area.

Moremi Game Reserve

Teeming with bird life and wildlife makes Moremi a prime wildlife area where elephant, hippo, buffalo, lion, and most other game (including eland, kudu, roan antelope, and if you’re lucky even leopard) can be seen in abundance. Bird life (both in the delta and dryland sections) is excellent especially along the Khwai River. During the dry season a congregation of all species, (bird and wildlife), along permanent rivers and water holes makes Moremi Game Reserve one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in Africa.

This area is a popular destination for bird watchers with over 450 species recorded, including many Okavango specials and lots of migrants during the summer months

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is not only about lion, zebra and wildebeest but also boasts Chobe bushbuck, leopard, cheetah, brown and spotted hyena, impala, kudu, jackal, porcupine, genet and caracal, to name but a few.
Accommodation

Deception Valley Trails Camp

Deception Valley Trails Camp is set in Deception Valley, a prehistoric riverbed flanked by petrified dune lands. The area is very appealing after brief rains when it is covered with nutritious grasses that attract vast herds from all over the enormous reserve. These large congregations of desert wildlife with their young are followed by opportunistic predators. Allowing for a sublime ‘back to nature’ desert experience, accommodation is in 3 metre x 3 metre (9.84 feet x 9.84 feet) dome tents, complete with mini-verandas. Pure cotton linen (with duvets) on GI stretchers, bedside table with a silver lantern and mini luggage benches finish the interior. The bathrooms are en-suite, canvas wraparound and open-air, with the entrance via a zip door at the rear of the tent. In addition to the short-drop toilet, your bathroom sports an old-style tin bucket shower – with hot water available whenever you should require it. There is a separate toilet near the main area available for use during the day. In the main area, evening campfires are the norm, while hurricane lanterns add to the atmosphere.

Xigera Camp

Nestled in a magnificent riverine forest, Xigera Camp embodies the essence of the Okavango Delta. The camp is found on the aptly-named ‘Paradise Island’, surrounded by year-round water and lush vegetation. We invite you to stay in one of the ten beautifully furnished en-suite tented rooms offering views over a seasonal floodplain and small lagoon. You will enjoy meals and drinks in the lounge and dining area overlooking the flowing channel or under the stars in our traditional African boma. During long lazy afternoons, take a plunge in the pool or soak up the sun on a lounger. Surrounded by spectacular wilderness, Xigera Camp will give you a feeling of wellbeing far from the hubbub of modern living.

Linyanti Discoverer Camp

Set in the 125 000-hectare Linyanti Concession bordering Chobe National Park, Linyanti Discoverer Camp is your base from which to explore this enormous wildlife-rich area. Unrivalled in its remoteness and space, the concession is bisected by an ancient watercourse – the now-flowing Savute Channel. Your innovative accommodation is in 6.3 metre x 3.5 metres (20.67 feet x 11.48 feet) walk-in wooden framed canvas sided tents. The tents are airy and designed to recreate the accommodation style of the early explorers, with richly coloured teak director chairs and minimalist interiors. Separate bedside tables with 12-volt reading lamps, canvas and wood wardrobes, bathrobes, comfortable beds and mirrors are provided. Private, en-suite separate toilet and showers form part of the structure. Paraffin hurricane lanterns and a crackling campfire set the ambience in the evening, while fresh, sumptuous meals are usually prepared around a fire by warm and friendly camp staff.

Toka Leya Camp

Set in the western sector of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Toka Leya Camp perches on the banks of the precipitating Zambezi River. Only 12km upstream from the world-renowned Victoria Falls, the camp is well placed for you to explore the scenic and vibrant region. Limiting our footprint on this pristine land, wooden walkways snake between the 12 spacious en-suite safari-style tents. You will feel safe and comfortable in your tastefully decorated room with an expansive wooden deck looking out at the mighty river – often presenting the sight of rambling elephants, grunting pods of hippo and idle crocodiles. Under a canopy of shady trees, the camp’s dining, lounge and bar areas plus infinity pool, offer ample space for you to relax.

Itinerary

Day 1: Maun to Xakanaxa

After your arrival at Maun International Airport you will board your charter flight at approximately 12h30 to the Xakanaxa airstrip in Moremi Game Reserve where you will be met by your guide. Our first three nights are spent in the Xakanaxa region where we explore the surrounding wilderness on morning and afternoon game drive excursions.

Activities: Game Drives

Day 2-3: Xakanaxa and Moremi Game Reserve

The next couple of days will be spent exploringing the Moremi Game Reserve.

Moremi lies on the eastern extremity of the Okavango Delta. Habitats here range from wide-open floodplains, marshes, lagoons, papyrus fringed channels, vast stands of Miscanthus and Phragmites, woodland and savannah. As a result of the extremely variable habitat the diversity of both wildlife and birdlife is excellent.

Activities: Game Drives

Day 4: Xakanaxa to Khwai

Following an early morning breakfast you take a slow drive through Moremi Game Reserve north-east towards the Khwai Community Area.

The Manuchira Channel is known as the Khwai River at its eastern most extremity. The day’s journey follows this water course, with the track weaving from the riverside and floodplains into the mopane veld and the woodlands that make Khwai one of the most scenic areas of the Okavango. We pass the magnificent Dombo Hippo Pools in the morning stopping to enjoy the scenery and the antics of the resident hippo.

Activities: Game drive and night drive

Day 5-6: Khwai Exploration Days

The Khwai River forms a boundary between the reserve and the community area. We spend the following two nights camping at an exclusive campsite in the community area, exploring the Khwai floodplains on game drives both during the day and at night. Exploring after dark with spotlights offers you an opportunity to experience some of the nocturnal animals that are rarely encountered during the day.

We will also have the opportunity to explore the surrounding wilderness on foot and mokoro and enjoy an up close and personal encounter with Botswana’s flora and fauna. It is important to note that night drives and guided walks are not permitted within the national parks and reserves. These activities are conducted outside the boundaries of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Khwai community area.

We spend our time between the dry-land habitats of the lead-wood and camel-thorn woodlands and savannahs and the riverside and marshy back-waters of the Khwai. Time permitting we may visit the lagoons and waterways of Xakanaxa where the largest heronry in southern Africa exists.

Activities: Game Drive, Walking Safaris (conditions permitting) Night Drives and mokoro excursion

Day 7: Khwai to Savuti

We head further north en-route to Chobe National Park, were we spend the following three nights camping in an exclusive wilderness campsite in the Savuti region, exploring the dessert-like landscape of game drives.

A fascinating days drive looking at some of the evidence of the Paleo-Lake Makgadikgadi that dried up some ten thousand years ago. The most challenging part of the trip is crossing the Magwikwe Sand-ridge that formed the shoreline for this massive inland sea. The winding track through this deep sand makes for interesting travel in the early summer! The old lake bed is now the Mababe Depression. The dense clay floor of the depression result in high protein feed for wildlife and the area teams with game after the rains. During the rain season the depression is impassable due to the “cotton soil” and alternative routes must be used.

Activities: Morning and Afternoon Game Drives

Days 8-9: Savuti (Chobe National Park) Exploration days

Unlike the vast majority of the country, Savuti is not a totally flat landscape. Large outcrops of volcanic rock reach up out of the Kalahari sands, towering over the endless savannah. These hills provide habitat for a completely different array of small wildlife, birds and plants. The Savuti Marsh has been the stage for many of the most dramatic wildlife documentaries in Africa. The wide open country, good ungulate populations and particularly strong prides of lion and hyaena clans make for dramatic wildlife interaction and excellent viewing opportunities. The now dry Savuti Channel runs through this landscape linking the dry sand-veld, the waterholes, the hills and the grassland that was the Savuti Marsh.

Activities: Game Drives and Bushman Painting Walks

Day 10: Savuti to Chobe River

On our final day on safari we will leave Savuti early to travel along the Chobe River arriving at Chobe Safari Lodge where we will stop for lunch before taking an afternoon boat cruise to end your safari. We will return to Chobe Game lodge and for our overnight.

Day 11: End of Safari

Today after breakfast you will depart to Kasane Airport for your flight back to Johannesburg

Wildlife

Xakana Region:

Wildlife: From the air only the larger animals are easily seen. These include large breeding herds of African elephant that live in the mopane scrub. On the open plains large herds of buffalo and lechwe can be seen and in the waterways, pods of hippopotamus are a common sight. Once you land in Xakanaxa and board your land cruiser, the smaller game animals can be found.

Birding: A good day for raptors with African Hawk-Eagle, Gabar Goshawk, Shikra, Little Sparrowhawk, Dark Chanting Goshawk, Tawny Eagle, Lesser Spotted Eagle* and Steppe Eagle* all inhabiting the mopane and adjacent woodlands. Other birds common along this route includes most of Botswana’s hornbills including Red-billed, Southern Yellow-billed, African Grey, Bradfield’s and the Southern Ground Hornbills. A large number of brood-parasites may also be seen. Diederick Cuckoo*, Levaillant’s Cuckoo*, Jacobin Cuckoo*, Great-spotted Cuckoo*, African Cuckoo*, Common Cuckoo*, Shaft-tailed Whydah, Pin-tailed Whydah, Eastern Paradise Whydah, Greater Honeyguide, and Lesser Honeyguide.

Moremi Game Reserve:

Wildlife: Moremi is amongst the best game reserves in Africa for viewing the endangered African wild dog. Xakanaxa is home to a resident herd of several hundred buffalo whose range covers the territories of at least 4 prides of lion which may often be seen flanking the ever moving herd. Breeding herds of elephant move between their browsing areas in the mopane forests and the fresh water of the Okavango. Red lechwe are one of the more unusual antelope species and commonly found here.

Birding: The swampy areas of Xakanaxa are home to African Rail, Coppery-tailed Coucal, Black Coucal*, Red-chested Flufftail, African Crake*, Black Crake, Chirping Cisticola, Luapula Cisticola, Purple Swamphen, Allen’s Gallinule to name but a few. The open waters attract African Skimmer, Saddle-billed Stork, Yellow-billed Stork, Intermediate Egret, Goliath Heron, African Fish Eagle as well as the globally threatened Slaty Egret and Wattled Crane.

Khwai:

Wildlife: The western mopane veld is home to mostly breeding herds of elephant whilst the eastern reaches of Khwai is home to some impressive old bulls. The mature bulls revel in the cool waters of the Khwai and are far more approachable while drinking and bathing than the breeding herds. The river has an unusually high density of hippo as well as some huge crocodile. Leopard, cheetah, serval and lion are common predators along this route and both Xakanaxa as well as Khwai are included in the home ranges of 2 different packs of wild dog. General game includes southern giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, tessebe and red lechwe with roan and sable antelope being less common residents.

Birding: In the mopane woodlands African Hawk-Eagle, Tawny Eagle, Gabar Goshawk, Little Sparrowhawk, African Harrier Hawk and Shikra are common raptors. Mixed bird parties move through the canopy and include Red-headed Weaver, Stierling’s Wren-Warbler, Scarlet-chestedSunbird, Neddicky, Yellow-breasted Apalis, Chin-spot Batis, Diederik Cuckoo* to name but a few. The verges of the swamp form breeding grounds for the Rosy-Longclaw, Black Coucal*, Long-legged Bustard and the African Crake*

Savuti:

Wildlife: A day when anything could happen. The range of habitat that is covered encompasses most of the habitat types of northern Botswana. We pass through excellent lion country and some of the best cheetah country that our safari will cover. Elephant occur throughout the drive but are more common at the start and end of the drive where permanent surface water can be found.

Birding: The Mababe Depression is a birder’s paradise. The nutritious grasses that grow on the rich soils provide excellent seed for an impressive array of estrillids and viduids. Among these are the magnificently coloured Violet-eared Waxbill, Black-cheeked Waxbill, Village Indigobird, Shaft-tailed Whydah and Paradise Whydah. These in turn provide a good food source for small raptors such as the Little Sparrowhawk, Shikra, Gabar Goshawk, Red-necked Falcon and Lanner Falcon. It is not only the small birds that feed on the grass seeds, but rodents too. There are annual outbreaks of huge numbers of rats and mice. As a result huge numbers of Secretary Bird, Tawny Eagle, Black-shouldered Kite, Steppe Eagle*, Lesser-spotted Eagle*, Wahlberg’s Eagle* and Steppe Buzzard* can be found.

Chobe River:

Wildlife: While there are community areas that we pass through that are settled by local tribes, for the vast majority of the day’s drive we pass through wild country where wildlife moves un-inhibited by fences or man. Roan and sable antelope thrive in the teak woodlands where the low density of predators and lack of competition for food by other ungulates makes this prime habitat for these large ungulates. Leopard occur in these woodlands in low numbers but they are highly secretive and seldom seen. The Goha region has natural waterholes that hold water well into the dry season and herds of buffalo, Burchell’s zebra, greater kudu and elephant come down to drink.

Birding: The most unusual species are to be found in the teak (Baikea plurijuga)woodlands. This broad-leafed woodland, or miombo as it is locally known, provides good pickings for insectivorous birds that favour canopy habitat. Grey Tit-Flycatcher, Ashy Flycatcher, Paradise Flycatcher, Pallid Flycatcher, Scarlet-chestedSunbird, AmethystSunbird, Yellow-throated Petronia, Red-headed Weaver and Violet-backed Starling are only some of the species that move around in the “bird parties” in the canopy. Dickenson’s Kestrel, Red-necked Falcon, Peregrine Falcon* and Lizard Buzzard are some of the raptors to keep an eye out for, while the diminutive White-faced Owl can often be seen roosting in the road-side vegetation. Flappet Lark, Fawn-coloured Lark, Dusky Lark*, Olive-Tree Warbler* and Neddicky are species more likely to be enjoyed by the birding enthusiast.
