Itinerary

Day 1-2: Davison’s Camp, Hwange National park, Zimbabwe

On arrival at Victoria Falls, connect by scheduled charter flight to Hwange for 2 nights accommodation at Davison’s Camp on a fully inclusive basis.
Davison’s Camp is situated in the Linkwasha Concession, a remote north-eastern corner of Hwange National Park. Named after the founder of the Park and its first warden, Ted Davison, the camp overlooks an extremely productive waterhole that attracts a variety of plains game and predators.
Activities at Davison’s Camp include game drives or guided walks in the early mornings and evenings, while during the siesta hours, guests can view game from their tent verandas, as thirsty wildlife comes down to the waterhole to drink.

Day 3-4: Changa Safari Camp, Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe

Depart Hwange by light aircraft to Lake Kariba, where you will be met by a Changa Safari Camp Representative. A 20-minute boat transfer across the lake will deliver you to Changa Safari Camp for 2 nights’ accommodation on a fully inclusive basis.
Changa Safari Camp is a luxury tented camp situated on the shores of Lake Kariba in a private 5km2 concession in the north-eastern section of the Matusadona National Park, with magnificent views looking out across Hydro Bay towards the Matusadona Mountains.
Activities in  the area is a walker’s paradise: early morning or late afternoon walks in the company of one of the camp’s professional guides are a special feature. Game drives or cruises also take place; fishing on Kariba is also available.

Day 5-7: Ruckomechi Camp, Mana Pools National park, Zimbabwe

A short flight with wilderness Air from Kariba to Mana west Airstrip and a short road transfer will take you to Ruckomechi Camp. This camp is idyllically located, overlooking the Zambezi River and the imposing Great African Rift Valley.
Ruckomechi Camp is situated in an exclusive concession of Mana Pools National Park, in the heart of the Zambezi Valley. The setting of Ruckomechi, located amongst a large grove of acacia and ebony trees, allows for exploration of the rich and varied wildlife.
Activities include early morning walks with an experienced guide, morning and afternoon game drives, night drives and canoeing.

Accommodation

Davison’s Camp is nestled in a grove of beautiful false mopane trees and consists of eight twin-bedded en-suite tents and one family unit, along with a main area comprising a lounge and dining room, which altogether offers the quintessential Hwange safari camp experience.

Accommodation at Changa Safari Camp is in four large east African-style luxury canvas tents, all overlooking the lake. each tent has its own en-suite bathroom, with indoor shower, flush toilet, his and hers basins, outdoor bath tub and outdoor shower. The central area consists of several thatched structures linked together by raised wooden walkways and decks, and includes a lounge library, dining room, bar, beautiful deck and swimming pool, all overlooking Lake Kariba.

Ruckomechi Camp consists of ten spacious en-suite tents, including a honeymoon suite and family room, maximise views of the Zambezi River and the escarpment beyond. each has both indoor and outdoor showers, and the camp boasts an outdoor ‘bath-with-a-view’ in a secluded, scenic spot. A central dining, bar, library and main area complete the camp offerings. There is a separate deck with infinity pool for swimming and sun bathing, and an inviting, cushion-strewn sundowner and stargazing deck.

Wildlife

Hwange National park, Zimbabwe

Wildlife: Game viewing is productive year-round in the Linkwasha Concession and wildlife frequently encountered here includes lion, large herds of elephant, buffalo, leopard, white rhino, spotted hyaena, southern giraffe, sable, blue wildebeest,
impala, common waterbuck and reedbuck. There are a number of large, open plains areas which make for excellent game viewing; in summer, wildebeest, zebra and eland are found in abundance here, while in winter the waterholes are magnets
around which elephant in enormous numbers congregate to drink. Birdlife in the area is prolific and varied, with over 400 species to be seen.

Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe

Wildlife: There are a host of mammals and birds present in this diverse habitat. Leopard, lion, hyaena and cheetah are found here, as well as elephant, hippo and a multitude of antelope species. The birdlife here is prolific – over 350 species have been recorded, which include many waterbirds.

Mana Pools National park, Zimbabwe

Wildlife: An intoxicating blend of wildlife and bird species abound. The dry season sees large herds of elephant and buffalo together with hippo, waterbuck, kudu, nyala and eland all seeking to slake their thirst along the banks of the mighty Zambezi. Predators follow with lions frequenting the floodplains and adjacent woodland, while leopard stalk the thickets. Cheetah and endangered wild dog are also often seen. The area is equally famous for its superb birdlife, offering over 350 species including collared palm-thrush and African skimmer.

Day 1: Depart Cape Town

Depart from Platform 23 at Cape Town Station with an en-route visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein.

Day 2: Kimberley Highlights

On your arrival in Kimberley you will board a bus for the tour of the Big Hole and the Diamond Mine Museum.

Depart Kimberley and traverse the Highveld.

Day 3 & 4: Journey through South African history

Arrive at the Rovos Rail Station, Pretoria. Transfer to your hotel for two nights. Following day at leisure or tour the city, Soweto, Johannesburg, Constitution Hill and the Apartheid Museum. Overnight at hotel.

Day 5: Battlefields route

Depart Rovos Rail Station for Elandslaagte where the famous battle of between the British and the Boers took place during the Second Boer War in 1899.

Day 6: Visit to a KwaZulu-Natal Private Game reserve 

On arrival at the Nambiti Private Game Reserve you will embark on a Game drive.

A little later on in the day you have the option of joining a game drive in the Spionkop Reserve or a tour of the Spionkop battlefields.

Day 7: Journey’s End

Enjoy a visit to Ardmore Ceramics which includes an equestrian display.

Arrive at journey’s end at Durban Station.

In the en-suite bathrooms, original fittings combine with the modern technology of hot showers, hair dryers and shaver plugs. The Royal Suites, each of which take up half a carriage, are spacious and elegant measuring ±16 sq metres in size. Each has its own private lounge area and full bathroom with Victorian bath and separate shower. The epitome of luxury with handsome wood panelling and period Edwardian features, the air-conditioned suites accommodate two people offering the option of side-by-side twin or spacious double beds. In the en-suite bathrooms, original fittings combine with the modern technology of hot showers, hair dryers and shaver plugs.

Itinerary

Day 1: Depart Cape Town

Register and check-in at The Blue Train Lounge, Cape Town Station. Enjoy pre-departure snacks and drinks prepared for your arrival. Your trip starts with orientation by your assigned Butler regarding your stay on the Blue Train
Once everyone is settled down to enjoy brunch, the train will depart from Cape Town Station.

Your planned route takes you to Matjiesfontein where a 45 minute off-the-train excursion will take place. Before you embark on your excursion you will be invited for a glass of sherry at the bar. The sherry glass engraved with The Blue Train logo is a memento for guests to keep.

The Victoria  buildings and original nineteenth century London lampposts impart to the traveller, the uncanny sense of entering a colonial time warp – an oasis suspended in a different age.
After your activities in Matjiesfontein the train departs for its northbound journey to Pretoria.

En route, high tea will be served in the Lounge Car.

After an exciting interlude guests are free to refresh themselves and enjoy pre-dinner drinks at any one of the lounges on board.

Day 2: Morning and arrival in Pretoria

Day 1 Stellenbosch Wine Route

Leaving the mother city of Cape Town behind, we drive to the famous town of Stellenbosch, known worldwide for its quality wines, spectacular beauty, oak trees and historical buildings. Here we will have time to explore the town and sample some excellent wine from one of the local wine farms. Afterwards we will drive to the Cheetah Breeding Centre to experience these animals up close and personal.  On clear days the magnificent mountain scenery makes for a memorable first day.  On arrival at our accommodation stop for the night, your guides will brief you on what to expect from the days ahead.

Day 2 Cango Caves and Oudtshoorn

The Cango Caves are some of the most impressive limestone caverns and the different formations are quite astonishing. Today we take a guided tour of the Cango Caves. Stalagmites or Stalagtites? Can you tell the difference? You will have the opportunity to visit an Ostrich farm later in the afternoon.  Tonight we stay in Oudtshoorn.  Optional Activity: Ostrich Farm visit.

Day 3 Knysna/Plettenberg Bay

Day 4/5 Bloukrans and Tsitsikamma National Park

The first few hours of the famous Otter Trail Hike are included in your Activity Package.  For those needing an adrenaline boost the nearby Bloukrans Bridge is home to the world’s highest bungee jump at 216m! Day 01 – Departing Cape Town – Oudtshoorn

Depart Cape Town and travel through the ‘Little Karoo’ and Montagu, a picturesque and historic spa town.

En route, stop off in the town of Barrydale, where you will have the opportunity to visit a local farm school, interact with the children and teachers, spending time with them in the classroom learning more about the local farming community, before continuing to Oudtshoorn, the “ostrich feather capital” and centre of the world’s Ostrich farming industry. (The school visit is subject to school being opened) Overnight in Oudtshoorn. [D]

Day 02 – Oudtshoorn

After breakfast take a tour of the spectacular limestone caverns of the Cango Caves, one of the world’s great natural wonders, sculpted by nature through the ages. Afterwards, ascend the Swartberg Mountains via the world renowned Swartberg Pass (weather permitting). Get close to nature and explore the spectacular Sandstone formations dating back more than 300 million years. Feast your eyes on the full splendour of diverse “fynbos” species ranging from various protea species as well as “cone bush” and “pin cushions”. Return to Oudtshoorn for a tour and light lunch at an Ostrich Farm. Overnight in Oudtshoorn. [BL]

Day 03 – Knysna

After breakfast, travel over the scenic Outeniqua Pass to George, the administrative hub of the Garden Route area and then onto Knysna, known as the oyster box of South Africa, nestling on the banks of a beautiful lagoon in the heart of the Garden Route. Enjoy a lagoon cruise to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, where you can take a trailer ride to the top of the Western Head to enjoy panoramic views of the town and lagoon, returning for lunch under the milkwood trees. The afternoon is at leisure to further explore this charming town set around a natural harbour lagoon. Overnight in Knysna. [BL]

Day 04 – Knysna

After a leisurely breakfast, drive through the Tsitsikamma Forests, continuing to Bloukrans Bridge, the highest single span arch bridge in the world, currently offering the highest commercially operated Bungy Jump in the world. Explore this breathtaking stretch of the Garden Route, where mountains, indigenous forests, deep gorges, and lush vegetation hug the rugged coastline of cliffs and sandy beaches. Here is an abundance of indigenous flora, ancient yellowwood trees and magnificent fynbos plants. In the afternoon you’ll return to Knysna, via Plettenberg Bay, originally christened “Bahia Formosa” (beautiful bay) by early Portuguese explorers. The highlight of the area is undoubtedly the rivers, beaches and the bay with its ideal conditions for all facets of watersports, including sailing in the safe waters of the Bay, superb rock and surf fishing and scuba diving spots. Day 05 – Hermanus

Today, begin the first leg of the return journey. Travel via George and Mossel Bay to the picturesque Cape Dutch town of Swellendam, where lunch will be enjoyed. This charming town was founded in 1745 at the foot of the Langeberg Mountain Range and is famous for its young berries, eclectic architecture and National Parks, as well as outdoor activities. Our journey further continues to the seaside resort of Hermanus, known as the heart of the whale route, offering the best land based whale watching (Aug-Nov) in the world. Overnight in Hermanus.

Day 06 – Hermanus – Stellenbosch – Depart

After a leisurely breakfast depart Hermanus and continue to Somerset West, travelling via the scenic coastal road to Gordon’s Bay. This is a spectacular route with steep cliffs and lovely coves. Locals label it as the Helderberg areas own “Chapman’s Peak” drive and the route offers amazing views over False Bay. Travel to the Stellenbosch area, set within the scenic Cape Winelands. This “Heart of Cape Heritage and hospitality” is a gracious blend of old Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture. A wine tasting will be enjoyed, before travelling to Cape Town, where the tour ends on arrival. Passengers may disembark, on request, at Cape Town International Airport.

Day 1 & 2:

Johannesburg to Rhino Post Safari Lodge

Fly in from Johannesburg (OR TAMBO) to the newly refurbished Skukuza Airport situated within the Kruger National Park (55 minutes flying time). You will be transferred in an open 4×4 vehicle to Rhino Post Safari Lodge (20 minutes) which is situated on a 12000-hectare private concession in the Kruger National Park.  It is approximately 10km northeast of Skukuza Rest Camp. The concession shares a 15km boundary with Mala Mala in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, with game moving freely between the two reserves and comprises of environmentally sensitive areas previously unexplored, with huge diversity of both fauna and flora.

Rhino Post Safari Lodge is built on the banks of the dry Mutlumuvi riverbed using natural materials of stone, wood, thatch & canvas. Stilts raise the 8 spaciously appointed suites along the riverbank, allowing views of the Mutlumuvi riverbed from your bedroom, bathroom and private deck. The suites are set out in an open plan style with wooden floors, thatched roofs, canvas walls and glass doors and windows. Each en suite bathroom includes a deep, freestanding bath, ‘his & hers’ basins, a separate toilet and an outdoor shower surrounded by thick reed poles.  The raised walkways linking the spacious rooms to the main area, allows wildlife to walk through underneath, undisturbed by mankind.

On arrival at Rhino Post Safari Lodge, after a refreshing drink and a brief introduction to the lodge, you will be shown to your room. After settling into your suite, guests are invited down to the lounge, overlooking the water hole to enjoy a scrumptious high tea before departing for an afternoon / evening game drive.

Game-drive safaris at Rhino Post Safari Lodge are conducted in specially adapted open 4×4 Land cruisers, with professional guides.

At sunset the game drive will stop for sun downer drinks while watching an African sunset before continuing into the night, spotting nocturnal animals.  Returning to the lodge in time to freshen up, enjoy a drink before a sumptuous dinner on the deck as you recount the day’s events, all the while accompanied by the night sounds of the bush.

Day 3 -5:

Flight to Thonga Beach Lodge

Road transfer (open 4×4 vehicle – 30 minutes) to Nelspruit (KMIA) Airport. Here you will board your aircraft for a spectacular scenic flight over Swaziland to Mazengwenya Airstrip (1hr 15 mins flying time). At Mazengwenya you will be met by a member of staff from the lodge and transferred in open 4×4 vehicle to Thonga Beach Lodge.

On arrival at Thonga Beach Lodge guests will be shown around the lodge & taken to their room and given time to unpack and relax before coming through to some enjoy an afternoon activity. After enjoying one of the many activities hosted at Thonga you will have time to freshen up before coming through for a delicious meal under the stars.

Thonga Beach Lodge is set on the secluded Mabibi Bay, in the heart of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, an internationally recognized World Heritage Site.  With direct access onto the pristine shores of the Maputaland coast, this luxury lodge is the ideal place to discover one of the last unspoilt and undeveloped wilderness beaches left on the African continent.  Mabibi is a magical place of tranquil swimming bays and snorkelling reefs, coastal forests, grasslands, bush, shimmering lakes and exquisite sandy beaches.  It’s clear, warm waters offer superb snorkelling and fantastic offshore scuba diving.

Activities at Thonga Beach Lodge include scuba diving, Open Ocean experiences, kayaking and sundowners at Lake Sibaya, guided snorkelling, seasonal turtle drives/walks, Tsonga Cultural tours and forest walks. Whether a walker or a diver, there are a wealth of activities to explore this beautiful hideaway, or maybe simply relax with a Sea Spa treatment or on the beach deck.

Scuba diving at Mabibi is phenomenal.  The professional lodge diving team can accommodate enthusiasts, from the beginner to the veteran.  For those who don’t dive, there is an Open Ocean Experience.  An exciting launch through the surf in front of the lodge takes guests beyond the breakers to a world of dolphins, whales and snorkelling.  The warm Indian Ocean supports a myriad of fish and marine life.  Guests can sometimes swim with dolphins or whale sharks, or snorkel with Manta rays and giant turtles.

In Summer there are nocturnal walks and drives along the beach in search of pre-historic turtles laying their eggs.  Witness the culmination of an incredible journey as giant Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in carefully prepared nests.  Turtle tracking is offered in the evening from November to end-February (for the laying from Nov to Jan and hatchlings from end Dec to end February.) Every precaution is taken to ensure these magnificent creatures are not disturbed during the laying process and data collected from the turtle drives are submitted to the Ezemvelo Turtle Monitoring programme.

Day 6:

End of Tour

After breakfast you will check out of Thonga Beach Lodge and be transferred in open 4×4 vehicle to Coastal Cashews where you will met by a 2 x 4 vehicle which will transfer you back to Richards Bay Airport. The first 5 kms are on a gravel road and thereafter you will travel on good tar roads bypassing typical rural villages, through parts of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, via the town of Hluhluwe to Richards Bay Airport (3 hours driving). From Richards Bay you will catch your scheduled flight back to Johannesburg (OR Tambo)

Day 1-2: Kruger National Park

Your journey begins with a scheduled flight from Johannesburg to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. On landing, you will be warmly greeted for a private transfer to Lukimbi Safari Lodge in the famous Kruger National Park – roughly 1h55 min drive away – where you will spend the following two nights. Arrive at the lodge, take some time to settle in before an afternoon game drive. Lukimbi is situated in the game rich, southern section of the world renowned Kruger National Park. Bounded by 3 major river systems, the extensive 15 000 hectare area offers a diverse array of habitats. The vast grasslands dominate the northern portion, whereas the southern and central areas are more heavily wooded and interspersed with lush riverine thickets.
Relaxation can be spent lazing around the pool or indulging in one of the many spa treatments the on-sight spa has to offer.

Day 3-4: Sabi Sand Game Reserve

Enjoy an early morning game drive before breakfast. You will then be transferred to the airport for your short flight to the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve.
Arrive at Idube Game Reserve, situated in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, in the heart of South Africa’s premier wildlife conservation area of the Greater Kruger Park. Game, including the Big 5, is viewed really close by from open Landrovers, or spotted on guided walks. The experienced rangers & trackers are trained to give guests the best possible wild life experience.
Head out on morning and afternoon game drives, animal sightings are professionally handled and controlled. Drives are normally 3 to 4 hours long, with a stop along the way for tea, coffee or sundowners. Idube is particularly well known for the frequent and excellent sightings of leopards – a photographer’s dream come true.
An optional morning guided walk is offered or you may choose to relax around the pool or indulge in a spa treatment in the privacy of your own room.

Day 5: Perfect Safari Ending

Day 1:  Gauteng – Pilanesberg

We depart Johannesburg around 11h00 to allow us to reach the Lodge around mid-day. Located in the crater of an extinct volcano, Pilanesberg has a unique ecosystem. The complex’s rare rock types were created by ancient volcanic eruptions that eroded to create varied soil types, which in turn leads to the uniquely varied vegetation.

We arrive at the lodge in time for lunch. After lunch you can settle in and relax before enjoying afternoon tea and then joining the afternoon game drive. This drive is conducted in the Big 5 Pilanesberg National Park in an open game drive vehicle, allowing you the best possible views and an up close experience with nature.

Dinner is a scrumptious affair served under the stars (weather permitting). The lodge boasts an extensive wine list and full bar, which is not included in the price.

Day 2 & 3: Pilanesberg
An early start give us time to have coffee and a snack before we set off on our morning game drive. Early morning is a very good time for game viewing as you may be able to see some nocturnal animals before they call it a night, and also to see lots of diurnal animals starting to get ready for the day.  Pilanesberg is home to a huge variety of animals and some of these include lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, rhino, buffalo, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, springbok and so much more!

We return to the lodge for a scrumptious, leisurely breakfast. After breakfast you have time to relax at the lodge’s pool, go for optional spa treatments or read a book before lunch is served around 14h00.

The afternoon drive often extends into the early hours of the evening, allowing you the opportunity to spot some of the more nocturnal animals.

Dinner is served under the stars, weather permitting. The day ends with discussions around the open fire about what you saw today and the plans for tomorrow.

Day 4: Pilanesberg –  Gauteng
We rise early, have a quick cup of coffee and a snack and depart on an early morning drive in the hope of finding some of the nocturnal and diurnal animals before they settle down for the day. This is also the most active time for most predators, both big and small.  With the sun slowly climbing higher above the savannah, we experience all that the park has to offer, including the well marketed Big 5 and the incredible wealth of flora, birds and smaller mammals that make the Pilanesberg National Park unique. After our morning drive, we return to the lodge for breakfast.

The drive back to Johannesburg takes approximately 3 hours you will be back in the mid afternoon. Should you wish to sleep over in Johannesburg on this night, Outlook Lodge (4*) offers great hospitality in close proximity to the airport.
