Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is part of a huge conservation area, which incorporates the adjacent Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Masai Mara in neighbouring Kenya. Huge numbers of wildlife move freely throughout this vast grassland, allowing for outstanding wildlife sightings.

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp is situated in the remote reaches of the western corridor of Serengeti National Park. Set on the banks of an oxbow lake formed by the Grumeti River, the Camp provides the perfect vantage point for witnessing the Great Migration.

Grumeti offers exclusive tented accommodation tucked under shady palm fronds and overlooking the river, with its resident hippo family. Decks open onto the riverfront, and intimate cushioned spaces around the pool offer guests a comfortable vantage point to watch the river inhabitants. At night, the camp buildings and paths are lit by flaming torches and lamps, creating a magical, romantic, back to nature ambience.

Accommodation

The ten opulent, en suite tents provide a sense of privacy and tranquillity. Each tent boasts a king-size bed and comfortable deck furniture from which guests can admire the breathtaking views. The tents have bright, whimsical Kente-cloth inspired interiors, with beaded curtains and intricate mosaic tabletops. The spacious, private outdoor shower, shaded by a wrought iron dome, affords guests an unusual stargazing opportunity.

Wildlife

During the annual Great Migration, thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores cross the Grumeti River, risking their lives to the jaws of enormous Nile crocodiles and other carnivores attracted by the easy pickings.

Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp is home to some of Tanzania’s unusual creatures, such as the black and white Colobus monkey, found nowhere else in the Serengeti. Unlike other parts of the Serengeti, the western corridor has resident populations of large herbivores and high densities of lion and spotted hyena hold territories around Grumeti. Bat-eared fox and serval are among the regularly seen smaller carnivores.

Bird life is prolific, with 341 species recorded at Grumeti. Black crake and African jacana dance across waterweeds in front of the camp. Bright Fischer’s lovebirds feed alongside grey-capped social weavers and blue-capped cordonbleu in the thickets. Tawny eagle, bateleur and white-headed vultures are among breeding raptors.

Visas

• South African Passport holders are strongly advised to obtain visa in advance.

• Visas are required by most foreign nationals whether visiting for a holiday or to conduct business.

• Please check the visa requirements before your visit.

Times

• The best time to see the Great Annual Migration of millions of zebra and wildebeest is probably between February and March, when the wildebeest and zebra have their young.

• Not only can you enjoy seeing the baby animals, but the predators are at the highest number too.

• The migration usually moves out of the Serengeti area by the end of June and does not return until December.

• June to November is Tanzania’s dry season and is the best time to visit all the parks, as they become more difficult to reach during the wet season.

• The main rainfall occurs from April to May, which is low season for the camps and lodges in the Serengeti, many of which close down for refurbishment at this time.

• Regional Air Services offer daily scheduled flights from Arusha airport to Grumeti airstrip, where guests are warmly welcomed and driven to the Camp.
